Responsible Use

An act of professional responsibility

Alberta's Health Compass provides powerful insight into our patients, our capacity, and our costs; but no tool can substitute for human judgment, ethical intent, or professional integrity. Every query, every analysis, and every decision made using the Health Compass is an act of professional responsibility. We are accountable not just for what the data shows, but for why we asked and what we do with the answer.

Responsible use is a commitment every user makes when granted access. These principles are not a checklist; they are habits of mind to carry into every query.

  • Start with a question, not a conclusionDefine your question first to avoid confirmation bias and selective reporting.
  • Report the full pictureInclude all relevant findings, even those that contradict your hypothesis.
  • Be transparent about your starting questionShare the question you aimed to answer so others can judge scope and interpretation.
  • Self-critique before presentingCheck for contradicting metrics, consider whether you would present the same if results were unfavorable, and ensure proper context.
  • Acknowledge limitationsClearly note data gaps, lags, or caveats as part of the analysis.
  • Seek a second set of eyesHave a peer or data steward review key analyses for accuracy and balance.
  • Usage is auditableRemember your queries and activity will be reviewed to support learning and accountability.
  • Raise concernsInvestigate unexpected results and consult a data steward when unsure about appropriate use.
